What are the criteria for a Work From Bermuda Certificate?

You must:

  • be at least 18 years old and pay the application fee
  • not have been convicted of a crime in Bermuda or elsewhere
  • possess valid health insurance coverage
  • demonstrate employment with a legitimate company or your own company registered and operating outside of Bermuda, in the case of a remote worker
  • provide evidence of enrollment in a Research, Undergraduate, Graduate or Doctorate Programme, in the case of a student
  • have substantial means and/or have a continuous source of annual income

If I am self-employed, is there the same requirement to demonstrate employment?

Yes. Providing appropriate documentation is required; this could include a simple letter outlining the details, a certificate of incorporation, or other appropriate documentation.

What will I receive to signify that I have been approved?

All responses will be sent by email. Approved applicants will receive a Work From Bermuda Certificate via email.

Once a completed application has been submitted, when should I expect to receive a response?

The turnaround time is five business days.

Do family members have to apply separately?

Yes, family members will need to apply separately and pay a separate fee. An income earner with dependents should submit one form for each family member. All related applications must be submitted on the same day.

Are accompanying domestic staff permitted?

Yes. Domestic staff are permitted, however the employer is required to apply for a Standard Work Permit, by submitting a completed application, which will not be unreasonably denied.

Are certificate-holders’ children allowed to attend local schools?

Yes. They may attend public or private schools in Bermuda.

Can I purchase a car for the time I am on the island?

Yes, and after 30 days you will be able to take the Driver’s Examination at the Transport Control Department. It is not possible to lease a car in Bermuda. The law in Bermuda allows for one car for each household.

Can I rent cars or scooters?

Yes, mini-car rentals and scooters are widely available, many with special rates for long-term rentals. More information on this is available at the Bermuda Tourism Authority website.

Can I bring my pets and what do I need to do—is there any quarantine for them?

If successful, will I land in Bermuda as a visitor or a resident?

If you submitted an application in advance and received the Work From Bermuda Certificate, you will land as a resident because you will have your supporting documentation. Anyone who has not yet applied, or has not received an approval, will need to land as a visitor.

Will I need to pay income tax in Bermuda?

No. Remote workers and students are not employed in Bermuda so you will not pay income tax.

What is the Customs allowance for certificate-holders moving to Bermuda for the first time?

Customs allowance is $200 per person, per trip, which is the same allowance as Bermudians and other Bermuda residents.

Can I purchase health insurance in Bermuda if necessary?

Yes, multiple Bermuda insurers are developing healthcare products to meet the needs of certificate holders. The Bermuda Business Development Agency will have more information.

What is the quality of healthcare in Bermuda?

Healthcare services in Bermuda are excellent. Bermuda has private clinics as well as private medical doctors and numerous pharmacies. Bermuda’s general hospital, King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, is an A&E hospital equipped with an intensive care unit (ICU), obstetric unit, dialysis unit, and several other specialty units.

What can I do if I want to keep my company permanently in Bermuda? How do I facilitate this?

You should contact the Bermuda Business Development Agency to facilitate incorporation of your business/company in Bermuda.

Where can I find out more about pandemic border-entry protocols?

Is the Work From Bermuda 1 Yr Residential Certificate renewable?

Yes. It is renewable on a case-by-case basis. There is no guarantee of renewal and it is not automatic; a new application must be submitted. Those who require a period longer than 12 months must apply for a standard residential certificate.

Is there a cap on the number of Work From Bermuda 1 Yr Residency Certificates that will be issued?

Bermuda’s open spaces and beaches are among the most beautiful in the world. Policymakers will be deliberate about ensuring the number of remote workers stays at a healthy and sustainable level.
